Scott Wiley Wins the Alabama River Tournament
The Lowrance event on Jones Bluff Reservoir started with a hot, muggy morning that ended with temperatures in the high 90's.
Jigs or worms?
LA Po Boys angler Scott Wiley started that hot, muggy day flipping grass with a jig. That jig would only produce small fish so he switched his strategy to wood. He also started flipping and pitching a NetBait Big Bopper worm in the Bama Bug color on big lay-downs with tops that ended close to drop offs or deep water. "All my good fish including the 5.67 lb. largemouth came off the brushy end of trees in deep water on the river."
The NetBait Big Bopper worm helped Scott catch and win the Scott Crump Toyota "Did What It Took" 1st Place check for $1,500!! This victory is especially sweet for Scott because it happened on what would have been his best friend, Vince Rook's birthday. Vince died in a hunting accident in January 2007. It is also ironic that Scott will join other members of the 2011 ABFN State Team in Kentucky. You see that when his friend Vince made the State Team, Scott traveled with him to Paducah, Kentucky to practice on the Ohio River with his buddy.
Vince was not only Scott Wiley's fishing partner, he was a leader in the Baldwin County community. He helped raise funds for the disabled. He motivated others to give of their time and money for worthy projects and left a legacy that would result in the Vince Rook Memorial Bass Club. Scott said I felt like he was with me Saturday. I caught the five-pounder and said "I just need two more buddy. Then I caught a three-pounder and then a two-pounder. Yeah, he was with me!"
Jigs or worms? When I called three-time ABFN State Team member Sean Dassau to ask what he did to bring in 14.56 lbs. for his 2nd Place finish, I assumed he would give his standard answer----"pitching a black and blue jig." I was surprised when he laughed and said "I pitched the jig early and could only manage a small limit. The fish I weighed in all came on a Zoom Ol Monster Red Bug worm."
Sean also was the highest finishing Fishin 4 a Cure Team member and will collect a $250 bonus check from Airport Marine.
Worms or jigs? When I talked with 3rd Place and Big Fish winner Jamie Horton, I knew what his answer would be and I was dead on! "Black and blue jig on the river." Jamie pitched a black and blue jig with a Zoom trailer on a tree top in ten feet of water to land the 6.05 lb Big Fish to give him a total of 14.01 for 3rd Place.
Central Alabama Bassmasters' Lamon Godwin won his second Non-Boater Bonus of $500 this year at Cooter's Pond. He finished 2nd at the Mobile Delta and 7th at this month's event at Jones Bluff. Lamon owes it all to his friend Scott Luster. He had stopped fishing for a couple of years when Scott talked him into becoming his Non-Boater. He had no complaints when he left South Alabama with his two checks!!
At Cooter's Pond, Lamon drew out with Lester Taylor of Rumblin Waters. Lester, knowing that Lamon was in contention for Non-Boater Angler of the Year, took him to some brush piles he knew about and even pointed out where to throw his crank bait. His first cast netted the tournaments 2nd biggest fish-a 5.77 lb. largemouth.
The Central Alabama Bassmasters, consisting of Quillie Trott, Scott Luster, J. D. Perez, Joe Wikoff, Mike Horne and Kevin Gibson took team honors with 50.38 lbs. Kowaliga Bassmasters came in 2nd Place with 40.35 lbs. Rumblin Waters Bass Anglers finished in 3rd Place with 39.11.
The Lowrance Angler of the Year race continues to heat up. Scott Wiley is leading with this win, but is also qualified for the State Team by virtue of his win. Remember, the top three anglers off the AOY list that have not previously qualified make the State Team. Also, AOY points are totaled AFTER the State Championship on Lake Eufaula is complete. A regular qualifier 1st Place finish is worth 200 points. A win at the Championship is worth 300 points. If Scott stays in the top 3, the 4th Place finisher will also be on the State Team.
Two-time State Team member Tony Lister leads the Non-Boater AOY list. The Non-Boater list is dominated by South Alabama anglers with the exception of Lamon Godwin in 2nd Place. Gregg Quinley of L A Po Boys is in 3rd and former State Championship winner and State Team member Chris Pope is in 4th Place. This race is also anybody’s and will conclude at the State Championship.
